So apparently we women have knee boobs! This is not something that you are ever aware of as a western woman and it seems that western men can't see them either... However, our dear East African men can definitely see something that we don't, when they look at a woman's knees.
If you wear a skirt or anything that shows your knees almost every pair of Tanzanian male eyes in the place look at your knees - it is most disconcerting.. Especially if you are in the middle of a conversation and their eyes drop.... As women we are kind of used to the stray glance downwards away from our face toward our chest however, we graciously pretend it doesn't happen or give a glare....depending on the day. However, when the glance is at your knees it is particularly obvious and there is no pretending just plain embarrassment.
On asking about this phenomenon I discovered that knees are equivalent to breasts for western culture!! This of course, changes ones dress code here and I will be investing in some African mama style skirts....
