Mango worms.... and ironing your underwear

Well I recently found out about the extraordinary worm which they call a mango worm. I know it has other names like the Tumbu worm as well. What happens is that a pretty ordinary looking house fly lays its eggs in your clothing while they are hanging on the line. Then, when you wear your clothes the eggs use the warmth of your body and the eggs hatch and burrow into your skin. Very soon you have what looks like a small mosquito bite which looks like it is becoming infected. Soon it looks like a pimple then a boil. It becomes very painful. After this you may attempt to squeeze the "pimple" only to find some worms come out!!!!! Gross!
The only way to ensure that you kill these worms is to iron everything, including your underwear..... or you can put them in the micowave!! if you have a microwave.... or electricity... that is.

How do I know all this? A friend of mine recently found 31 mango worms in her body!!!

Hideous, eh?

Hi Judi,

I read a folk remedy for this is to lay a peice of bacon over the welt on the skin. The worm removes itself from the human host and burrows into the bacon fat where it can be easily removed. An alternate remedy is to apply a smear of petroleum jelly over the wound which causes the worm to poke its head out to breathe.

Haven't had opportunity to try it out as Mango Worms aren't often seen in these parts.
