Princess Leah

About a month ago a woman came to visit us with her child strapped to her back. When I looked at the child I could tell something was wrong but could not figure out what the problem was. This seeming baby was actually a seven year old child who was the size of a 1 year old but with legs and arms stiff and folded up. Apparently, the baby was born a healthy little girl and the doctor at Mt. Meru hospital asked if he could do some experimental injections as part of his research. After 2 weeks, baby Leah was brain damaged and would never walk again and had lost all muscle tone.
Now, some 7 yrs later, the mother was coming to ask for funds to take her daughter to hospital for a check up because Leah had been coughing throughout the night. We gave her 25,000 tz shillings (around $25) and sent her on her way. We also prayed for Leah and her mother before she left. 3 days later she returned with most of the money. She had been told by the doctors at the hospital that they would treat her daughter for nothing and that she could have free medication for her daughter. She was sure that this was a result of our prayers. Therefore she returned 22,000 tz... having used 3,000 for the bus to get to the hospital.

Today she was back with a photo of her daughter and a letter from a local hospital for mentally handicapped children requesting funds for physiotherapy for Leah. Again, all we could afford to give her was 25,000 tz and we apologized that this was all we were able to give her for her 120,000 tz shillings required to house Leah at the hospital for 2 months. She was extremely thankful for whatever we could give her and wept her thanks to me.

My heart breaks with the needs that we are surrounded by. This mother even asked for a job where she might be able to carry her child on her back and tend to her child when needed. This makes employment for her very difficult. Pray with me for Leah and Mama Leah.
