Church in the sewerage slum

A view of the sewerage ponds

slum near the sewerage ponds .... this area used to be very dangerous and full of criminals. A number of churches have been planted here and it is now safe to walk around after 6pm.

inside the church the congregation take great pride and decorate with swathes of fabric and plants...

The choir performs

Last week, we went to a tiny church, made of tin and plastic, squashed amongst mud homes in a slum area here in Arusha. David and I have been teaching on family to a group of poor and humble people who have a mud floor and generous hearts. Cows moo and wafts from the sewerage plant come thru the "windows".

The questions raised after we asked the congregation to get into groups and discuss 1 Peter 3:7 and Gal 3:26-29 were insightful and showed a genuine wrestling with truth.

Should a woman married to a non christian obey her husband in all things? What if he is an alcoholic? Where do you draw the line? Why does the bible refer to women as the weaker vessel when we carry bigger loads than the men and we are stronger emotionally than men? We keep the family together.

If my wife is having trouble humbling herself in our marriage, how can I help her with that??? (I asked if his wife was in the room. she was, but was sitting on the other side of the church which is really common here. Then I asked if she was smiling!)

We had such fun getting them to answer their own questions and giving examples from our own marriage.

At the end of our seminar the pastor took a collection to give us a gift and presented us with $17 all of which was in 50 cent pieces. Truly a sacrifice for a this very poor church and a gift from the heart. Very humbling for us... and touching.

As a guy that has worked in 'church sound' for almost 30years, I find it interesting to see the worship team and their equipment in an African setting.

I'm curious how good the sound was, and if there was problems with feedback. Placing speakers behind the microphones is normally a no-no, and the bare iron roof above would not help the acoustics either, but the dirt floor and curtains probably would.

How did they get power for the PA system?

Inquiring minds need to know...

Wal,
sound is a nightmare here....
First of all, the louder the sound the more anointing seems to be the belief. If you can get people's attention you can get them saved????
If you want to hear the choir performing I have uploaded a video of this on my facebook so you can actually hear this sound... this particular church was not as loud as most. Thankfully....
