Unfortunately, the behaviour we thought was affection and loyalty turned out to be Flash following the young Flash around until he was able to sit on top of him and squash him.
Apparently, this behaviour is to inform the younger male that Flash is more dominant and this is his territory. Initially, I hoped he was trying to protect the smaller tortoise from the wind .... but alas the smaller tortoise was pushed into the earth and looked dead. However, after poking he moved so we removed Flash from the scene of the crime and although tortoises can't hear we are certain our tone was clear..
