“What end profit is there for someone who gains the whole world and ends up losing their own soul?” Mk 8:36
Yesterday we were invited to farewell drinks with a couple who are moving to Zimbabwe. They had been working in the hunting community here, with a highly demanding life-style, requiring absences of up to 6 months in the bush – a marriage and family killer. The big money seems to bring everything but happiness and true fulfillment, and it’s rare to see people bite the bullet like these dear folk have done. To see them stand up among their peers in the middle of the party, and honestly share their story, was a warning call to many there and example of what can be done if you’re serious about life.
Well done, guys – we’ll be praying for you!
Another example is a lawyer friend of ours in Canada, who made a decision early on in his career that he would settle for less (passing on promotion, partnerships etc) in order to prioritize marriage and family above significant financial gain.
These kind of people fly against the world’s claims that everyone has a price – as one 20th century martyr put it, “He’s no fool who loses what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose!”
These kind are heroes in my book…
